On Registration
The BIEN Congress is the largest annual event of basic income advocates and those interested in basic income around the world. As with the past 21 Congresses, it will be held in a spirit of friendship and solidarity, and all speakers, including keynote speakers, moderators, and audience – in other words, all participants – are required to register in advance.
Registration is a two-step process. The first step is to submit the registration application and the second step is to pay the registration fee. Once you have completed both processes, your registration is complete. You will receive an email with your personal login details to access the online venue.

This second in a special series of discussions is dedicated to reflecting on what we can learn from the Irish Basic Income for the Arts Pilot Scheme, as it unfolds.
The Government of Ireland is running a Basic Income pilot that began in September 2022. 2000 artists and cultural workers will receive a weekly unconditional income of €325 weekly for a period of three years. This second session will be an opportunity to check-in with some of the artists involved in the pilot scheme and learn from them about how it is affecting them and their creative communities. This time artists Shane Finan, Alisha Doody and Tadhg Ó Cuirrín will give their personal insights from the perspective of recipients and members of the ‘control group’ who applied but will not receive the basic income. Also Basic Income Ireland will give a brief introduction to their work and the political context of Ireland.

Geoff Crocker proposes to use Sovereign Money. He will discuss his proposition with Malcolm Sawyer who is a retired professor of economics from the University of Leeds and a critic of the concept of Sovereign Money. So this promises to be a lively online event where you will learn more about Universal Basic Income and Sovereign Money. You will have the opportunity to ask questions and provide comments on the topic.

This year’s FRIBIS Annual Conference will take place in Freiburg, Germany from 9 to 11 October and will focus on the topic “Care and Gender – Potentials & Risks of UBI“.
Over the past few decades care work and the social dimension of gender have increasingly become central issues in both academic and public debates. The close connection between them is evident from the high number of women involved in care activities. This year’s FRIBIS Annual Conference will examine both topics independently of each other but it also aims to explore their overlaps in content. The common reference point will be the Universal Basic Income, whose potentials and risks for the care field and gender-related issues will be explored.
Applications for active participation in the conference are now open for submission. The deadline is 30 June, 2023. As a university institute that strives to bring together both civil society actors and academics, FRIBIS is looking forward to receiving applications from academics in the field as well as from participants from civil society. More detailed information on the conference contents and registration procedures can be found here. Participation as a member of the public is also possible (registration opens on 5 July 2023).

BIEN member Eduardo Suplicy, pictured above with BIEN Chair Sarath Davala at the Hyderabad BIEN Congress, testified in favor of a measure implementing a law he authored in 2004 gradually implementing a Citizens Basic Income (UBI) in Brazil. The invited testimony took place on 25 April 2023 in the Federal Senate and on May 7 the newspaper Folha de São Paulo published a slightly abbreviated version of Suplicy’s written testimony that you can read (in Portuguese) by clicking here.
