A large number of associations, grassroots organisations, social activists and committees have launched a campaign to propose a popular initiative bill on guaranteed minimum income in Italy. The campaign has been launched in July 2012 and will end in December 2012. During this time 50,000 signatures need to be collected.
The organisations of the campaign reckon that it is time to include the issue of guaranteed minimum income in the national political agenda. Figures produced and released by the Italian National Statistics and Research Agencies tell about a country that is on the brink of social disaster, a social ‘default’ that is increasingly showing the need for a new redistributive policy, and therefore, the importance of implementing a guaranteed minimum income. “In order to recognise human dignity it is necessary to determine an economic threshold under which nobody should live. The issue of Guaranteed Minimum Income can no longer be postponed.”
So far, the campaign has sparked great social and political participation. Many public events have been organised throughout Italy during which the collection of signatures is taking place, and more and more associations and organisations are joining the campaign.
The campaign has an official website where it is possible to get information about the popular initiative bill, updates of the organizations joining the campaign, and the places where it is possible to sign the petition. The website also gathers material related to the campaign, and to the issue of basic income in Italy and Europe. The website is entirely in Italian.

A guanranteed minimal income, that should be unconditional (NOT bound to work!), individual and sufficient to permit full participation in society.
How should it be financed?
NOT through a higher VAT (value added tax) but through the taking over of money-creation from the private banks!
