The Canadian organization Why Should I Care organized an event on March 16th to foster the debate on basic income among engaged citizens. Speakers were Sheila Regehr of Basic Income Canada, and Jonathan Sas, Director of Research at the Broadbent Institute.
Sheila and Jonathan explained the concept of basic income and the reasons why it matters so much to the audience, leaving room for discussion and questions. The idea of implementing a basic income in Canadian society was generally well-received, however questions were raised regarding the details of implementing such a complex program. One particular topic of discussion concerned the Canadian healthcare system, which is seen by some as an obstacle to basic income as it ‘eats’ a major part of the national budget. Therefore some suggested that this money could also be given directly to individuals.

BIEN’s affiliate in Canada, the Basic Income Canada Network (also known by its French name Réseau canadien pour le revenu garanti) has just launched its new Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/BasicIncomeCanada.
This is the network’s first Facebook page and is part of a re-launching of BICN which has been ongoing since 2014. The re-launch has involved a new logo, a donations appeal, which has raised over $7,000, a call for volunteers and will also include a new website, to be launched this summer. The new website will also include tools for local chapters.
