Helsinki, Finland, “Basic income in a global world: Seminar” 13 April 2016

A seminar, entitled “Basic income in a global world: Seminar” will take place on 13 April 2016, from 12:00 to 16:00 in Kelan päätalon auditorio, Nordenskiöldinkatu 12, Helsinki tai video.

This seminar looks at prospects for a basic income in a global environment. What challenges do EU legislation and a globalised labour market present for the basic income? The seminar features lectures in English by Professor Guy Standing of the University of London and Jurgen de Wispelaere, a research fellow at the University of Tampere. It will also be broadcast live over the internet.

The event takes place in conjunction with Kela, which is beginning research to conduct a basic income pilot project in Finland.

ONTARIO Canada: polls show increase in support for Basic Income

A Forum Research poll, released March 26th, reveals that support for a basic income has increased in the Canadian province of Ontario.

According to the report, “In a random sampling of public opinion taken by the Forum Poll among 1225 Ontario voters, the plurality, 4-in-10, approve of an Ontario basic income to replace social assistance and other provincial support payments (41%). One third disapprove of the idea (33%) and as many as a quarter have no opinion (26%).”

According to the Huffington Post, approval of Basic Income in Ontario has risen from 27 to 41 percent since 2012 and disapproval has dropped from 39 to 31 percent so that a plurality now supports basic income (the rest being unsure).

The 16th BIEN Congress: “Social and Ecological Transformation and Basic Income” will in held in Seoul, Korea, 7–9 July 2016. The call for proposals is online. It is organized by the Basic Income Korean Network (BIKN). The BIEN Congress is the oldest and largest conference on Basic Income in the world, having had one meeting every two years since 1986. The organizers invite people from all over the world to make a proposal and participate in the Congress.

The Universal Income Project is looking for a motivated part-time Basic Income Organizer, helping to advocate for an American Universal Basic Income. They’re organizing Basic Income Create-A-Thons around the United States.

The first basic income Create-a-thon

A Create-A-Thon is a weekend marathon of intrinsically-motivated work, writers, artists, videographers, developers, musicians, and other creatives come together to create content and media around the theme of a Universal Basic Income in the United States. They’ve already organized one Create-A-Thon, which took place in November in San Francisco. They’re now looking to organize them in other cities.

This is a month-to-month position with a $1000 stipend per month, starting immediately. The commitment is 15 hours/week, and applicants must be in the San Francisco Bay Area. Location will be flexible for most work hours, but applicants must have regular access to a computer and internet.
