One of the three candidates supporting basic income ahead of presidential elections might withdraw her candidacy if Nicolas Sarkozy meets her condition.
Christine Boutin, president of the Christian Democrat Party and candidate in the presidential election in France in May, said she would back Nicolas Sarkozy in the second round of the election if he fulfills three conditions. The first one being to endorse the implementation of a basic income, secondly oppose the gay marriage, and finally push for the inscription in the constitution of the Judeo-Christian roots of the next European treaty.
“The are certain things I do want” Boutin said, “and will be the purpose of negotiations whether before or after the first round, depending on the threat of the far-right party, the National Front.”
Boutin has supported basic income for several years now. She advocates for a basic income of 400 euros per adult per month, and 200 per children, regardless of means. In her proposal, basic income would substitute for several current social grants the French system offers, and would be conditioned upon the completion of compulsory national service, military or civilian.
