European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI) invite the Commission, within the framework of its powers, to submit any appropriate proposal on matters where citizens consider that a legal act of the European Union is required for the purpose of implementing the European Treaties. It is necessary that the ECI has received the support of at least one million eligible signatories coming from at least 7 of all Member States.
The ECI only offers a very limited possibility of direct participation of citizens in order to influence the European Union politics, but the ECI gives the chance, to force the EU-Commission to deal with the topic mentioned in the ECI. This is very important considering the basic legal and social situation of the EU. Decisions of the EU-Parliament, where Unconditional Basic Income (UBI) was mentioned as one possibility to prevent poverty which should be checked, have not been taken into account by the European Commission until now, the interests of citizens have been ignored.
Therefore the participants of the Vienna UBI-Symposium in Oct. 2011 (press release and fact sheets) have decided to start an ECI concerning UBI in the year 2012. With this ECI the EU-Commission is requested by the signatories to use up all its means and possibilities to speed up the introduction of a universal, individual, unconditional basic income to ensure people an existence in dignity and with participation in society.
With this ECI we hope that the discussion process concerning a UBI will be enhanced Europe-wide and that the networking between organizations and initiatives for Basic Income will be enforced.

We are a group of people around the World called Desteni – Equal Life Foundation and we work on & prepair already a Solution called EqualMoney for our World to end this mass-abuse what currently exist.
In 2012 I will opening a Political Party here in Austria to start with what we have already worked out.
The Basic Agenda from the Equal Life Foundation is to make an effective & sustained change in any way what so ever so that Dignity is the primary state of Life. Only a bit common sense is required to see that it must start by our Money-System or rather how we as humanity handle Money and an unconditional Basic Income is for certain the beginning of our road into it.
It is cool to see that such a project is already running here in europe and I will definitely support it.
The existenz of poverty means nothing else as that we as humanity have done something wrong, I mean we all comes from Life and thus we are equal and have to take care on Life equally – but in our current state of seeing Life as it is taking care on each other isn´t given.
So lets do what is necessary to change so that all can live a Life in Dignity together.

Thank you very much for your comment. It is fine when you personally or even the “Desteni-Equal Life Foundation” support/s our attempt to achieve the introduction of the “Unconditional Basic Income”. It would be an importand step to a change in the social area. Certainly a number of other measures (some mentioned by you, e.g. “money-system”) are also very important to be realized so that all people can live in dignity.

Thank you, Mr. Klaus Sambor, for this great article! For many years now I have been waiting for such an idea. The European Citizens’ Initiative for the Unconditional Basic Income is an important step and approach to an existence in dignity!
Despite my good professional qualification and experience (diploma in music and opera singing, foreign language correspondent’s certificate, language trainer’s certificate) and my intensive efforts to find a good job, I am still unemployed and forced to reduce my life to a minimum subsistence level! This cannot be the future! I have already signed the petition for the UBI, and all European Citizens should fight for it! Please keep me informed on the progress of the ECI!
